Учитель английского языка: Today we are going to speak about Easter. Easter is one of the most favorite Christian holidays – the winning of the life under the death, the light under the darkness. Easter is a time of springtime festivals. Boys and girls, do you know the history of this bright holiday?

Ученики: This holiday is devoted to Jesus Christ. It tells us how he resurrected from the tomb. People believed in miracles after this.

Учитель английского языка: Right you are! In Christian countries Easter is celebrated as the religious holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the son of God. Tell me, please, do you want to know more about the history of Easter?

Ученики: Yes, we do! With pleasure.

Учитель английского языка: We are going to watch a short video, which tells us about life and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Look at the screen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9Z3Piqs-K0 (песня об истории праздника)

Учитель английского языка: Do you like the song?

The celebrations of Easter have many customs and legends. All of them are different in different countries. Do you know any traditions connected with Easter in Russia?

1 ученик: In Russia we say «Христос Воскрес!» and respond «Воистину Воскрес!».

2 ученик: In Russia preparation for Easter usually begins with decorating of eggs, cooking kulich and pasha, making Easter cards.

Учитель английского языка: Great! Do you know any Easter customs in European countries?

3 ученик: I have heard that they don’t have our kulichi, but only chocolate eggs.

Учитель английского языка: Well, do you want to know more about this holiday?

1-4 слайды: Let’s make a tour around Europe and learn how they prepare for the coming Easter and the first country we will visit is the country of the foreign language you study – this is Great Britain.

5 слайд: In the UK Easter is one of the major Christian festivals of the year. It is full of customs, folklore and traditional food. In Britain Easter occurs at a different time each year. It is observed on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. This means that the festival can occur on any Sunday between March 22 and April 25.

6 слайд: The main days in the UK celebrating of Easter are: Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and the day of Easter itself.

Palm Sunday is a Christian moveable feast that falls on the Sunday before Easter. In many Christian churches, Palm Sunday is marked by the distribution of palm leaves (often tied into crosses) to the assembled worshipers.

Maundy Thursday is the Thursday before Easter. Christians remember it as the day of the Last Supper, when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and established the ceremony known as the Eucharist.

On the Friday before Easter, Christians commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. This day is known as Good Friday. Calling it 'Good Friday' may seem a bit bizarre, but some people think that it was once called God's Friday or Holy Friday.

7 слайд: Many of the symbols and traditions of Easter are connected with renewal, birth, good luck and fertility. Of course as it is a Christian festival one of the main symbols is a cross, often on a hill. When Jesus was crucified, the cross became a symbol of suffering. Then with the resurrection, Christians saw it as a symbol of victory over death.

Easter eggs are a very old tradition going to a time before Christianity. Eggs after all are a symbol of spring and new life.

Exchanging and eating Easter eggs is a popular custom in many countries. In the UK real eggs were used before they were replaced by chocolate Easter eggs, in most cases. The eggs were hard-boiled and dyed in various colors and patterns. The traditionally bright colours represented spring and light.

Another popular Easter symbol in Britain is the Easter hare (or Easter Bunny as it is known in America. The strong influence of the USA means that in Britain the Easter hare is now more often referred to as an Easter Bunny). It was believed in Celtic times that the hare chased away the spirit of winter. Hares and rabbits are also a symbol of fertility since they often have multiple births. Some English children spend the Easter morning hunting for eggs that the Easter Hare has hidden from them, and the child who finds the most eggs wins a prize.

Учитель английского языка: I suggest us playing one of the traditional English Easter games, it’s called Easter Hunt, are you for?

Ученики: Yes, of course we are for playing this game!

Учитель английского языка: You will hear a boy, who will go egg hunting. You should follow him and mark the places, where Easter Bunny hid chocolate eggs, after this we will check these places on our poster and try to find all of the eggs. (Учащиеся дважды прослушивают аудиозапись, помечая, где спрятаны яйца, затем все вместе проверяем на большом плакате, где в прорези прикреплены вырезанные из цветной бумаги яйца.

At Easter a cunning Easter Bunny hides chocolate Easter eggs in the house or in the garden. I will go egg hunting. When I find a chocolate egg it is mine and I can eat it. Follow my instructions and draw eggs hidden in our house. Look at the bookcase. There is an egg behind the books. There is an armchair in the corner of the room. There is an egg under the armchair. Now look at the clock in the wall. There is an egg in the clock. There is a little table in the corner and there are some flowers on it. There is an egg in front of the flowers. And finally, there is an egg in the newspapers and magazines on the floor.)

8 слайд: There are some special meals eaten at Easter time, one of the most famous is Simnel Cake. This is a rich fruit cake covered with a layer of Marzipan. There are 11 marzipan balls put around the top of the cake that represent the 11 faithful disciples of Jesus. The cake also has a layer of Marzipan in the middle of it.

Hot cross buns – another popular meal, which is eaten throughout the Easter season now, were first baked in England to be served on Good Friday. These small, lightly sweet buns contain raisins or currants and sometimes chopped candied fruit. Before baking, a cross is slashed in the top of the bun. After baking, a confectioners' sugar icing is used to fill the cross.

Учитель английского языка: And now let` s watch the video about Sarah and learn how she spends Easter in her family.

An old rhyme was often sung by children awaiting their sugary treat. We heard the song in the video about Sarah. Let’s sing this song together! (Учащиеся поют песню вместе с учителем).

"Hot cross buns,

hot cross buns,
one a penny, two a penny,
hot cross buns.

If you do not like them,

give them to your sons,
one a penny, two a penny,
hot cross buns."

Учитель английского языка: It’s so good to sing this song together, but we should move to another country. This is the country of romantics, love and Eifel Tower. Can you guess its name?

Ученики: France!

Учитель английского языка: Sure this is France.

10-12 слайды: Easter in France is considered as the most important Christian celebration of the year. Many Christians may attend special church services to celebrate Jesus' resurrection on Easter Sunday. Church bells are not rung on the Friday and Saturday before Easter Sunday as a general rule. This is a sign of mourning. These are known as the Easter bells.

Flying Bells are another important part of the Easter traditions of France. French Catholics believe that on Good Friday, all the church bells in France fly to the Vatican in Rome, carrying with them the misery and grief of those who mourn Jesus' crucifixion on that day. These flying bells return on Easter Sunday morning and bring with them lots of chocolate and eggs.

The traditional Easter bunnies are not found in France. Easter celebrations in France combine the Easter symbols of bells and fish. The French Easter fish are called 'Poisson d'Avril', which means 'April Fish'. The Poisson d'Avril makes his appearance on the 1st of April, as French children delight in playing a kind of 'April Fool's' trick. They stick a paper fish onto the back of as many adults as possible.

Many people spend Easter Sunday with family members or friends and eat a festive meal. Spring flowers, lambs, birds' eggs and Easter eggs are symbols of Easter Sunday in France. They are symbolic of nature's rebirth or resurrection after the dark and cold winter period. Roast lamb with spring beans or other freshly harvested vegetables or leaves, brightly colored boiled eggs and omelets are popular. Easter eggs made of chocolate or candy are popular gifts and children are told that Easter hares, rabbits or bells bring the gifts.

An old French custom was a contest of rolling raw eggs down a gentle slope. The surviving egg was the victory egg and symbolized the stone being rolled away from the tomb.

Учитель английского языка: Children, do you like this French Easter game? Let’s play it right now! The rules of this game are very easy, we will roll our Easter eggs down this slope and the egg, which runs the first and is safe, will be our winner.

Учитель английского языка: It is very funny to play this game, but our train is waiting to move us to another country and the name of this country is Poland. Perhaps, anybody knows some of Polish Easter traditions.

Ученики: No, we don’t know polish Easter customs.

Учитель английского языка: So, now you will learn them.

13-14 слайды: Easter is one of the major holidays in Poland, and Easter celebrations are not limited to Easter Sunday. Easter-related traditions take place for more than a week in Poland. From Palm Sunday to Wet Monday, this period is marked with religious rites and practices with their origins in pagan times. It is important to note that Easter in Poland is celebrated Western Roman Catholic calendar.

The Blessing Basket or Swieconka is one of the most enduring and beloved Polish traditions. On Saturday people take to churches decorated baskets containing a sampling of traditional food to be blessed: hard-boiled shelled eggs, ham, sausage, salt, horseradish, fruits, bread and cake. Prominently displayed among these is the Easter lamb, usually molded from butter or sugar and colorful pisanki. The food has a symbolic meaning, for example:

* eggs - symbolize life and Christ's resurrection,
* bread - symbolic of Jesus,
* lamb - represents Christ,
* salt - represents purification,
* horseradish - symbolic of the bitter sacrifice of Christ,
* ham - symbolic of great joy and abundance.
The food blessed in the church remains untouched until Sunday morning.

Учитель английского языка: Our excursion is in the middle and we are going to Germany now. (слайды 15-16)

The German celebration of Easter (Ostern in German) is very much like that in most of the Christian world. It features the same fertility and spring-related icons—eggs, bunnies, flowers—and many of the same Easter customs.

In the weeks prior to Easter, Germany gets ready for a new season: You will see spring flowers on display and many traditional "Easter trees", twigs and brushes dripping with colorfully decorated eggs. The custom of boiling and painting eggs, the symbols of new life, began in Germany; the bright colors represent sunlight and growth.

Next to the Easter egg, the rabbit is probably the most popular Easter icon; the Easter bunny, symbolizing fertility, was first mentioned in German writings in the 16th century.

The bunny was then imported to America by Pennsylvania Dutch settlers, who called it "Oschterhase" ("Easter Hare"). Around 1800, the first edible Easter bunnies were made in Germany.

Another typical German tradition is the Easter bonfire. On the night of Easter Sunday, the Germans light big bonfires across the country to welcome the sun and the spring. Much of the wood used for the bonfire is old Christmas trees which have been collected and saved for the occasion.

Учитель английского языка: I see that you are a little bit tired of our long travelling and I want you to play one funny Easter game.

Учитель английского языка: You will divide in two teams, the first competitor will have an egg in the spoon. You should hold your spoon in your mouth, to carry the spoon by your hands is forbidden! The first person runs with an egg, reaches the line, runs back to the start and passes his spoon to the next person. The team, which will be the first and won’t break the egg, will win. Ready, steady, go!

Great! The team number ( ) wins! Take your sits in our train and look right – we are reaching the country of real pizza and pasta! This is Italy. (слайды 18-20)

While you probably won't see the Easter bunny if you're in Italy for Easter, you will find some interesting Italian Easter celebrations. Like all holidays in Italy, Easter, Pasqua in Italian, has its share of rituals and traditions.

Solemn religious processions are held in many towns on the Friday or Saturday before Easter and sometimes on Easter Sunday. Many churches have special statues of the Virgin and Jesus that play a big part in the processions. The statues may be paraded through the city or displayed in the main square. Parade participants are often dressed in traditional ancient costumes. Olive branches are often used instead of or along with palm fronds in the processions and to decorate churches.

Since Easter is the end of the Lent season, food plays a big part in the celebrations. Traditional Easter foods include lamb or goat, artichokes, and special Easter breads that vary from region to region. Pannetone and Colomba (dove shaped) breads are often given as gifts as are hollow chocolate eggs that usually come with a surprise inside.

Учитель английского языка: And now let` s watch the video about celebrating Easter around the world. Be very attentive. After watching you will answer the questions and get presents for the right answers.
