Thomas Cook

Today, travel agents offer all kinds of holidays to all types of people, as nearly everybody can afford some sort of holiday. Travel agents think that their customers (клиенты) consist of certain types of people. For each type, they try to offer the "right" kind of holiday, at the "right" price in the "right" country. All this has to be planned very carefully. So, while most people are still busy buying Christmas presents, the travel agents have already decided where their customers will be going next summer, what kind of things they will be doing there and how much money they will be spending on their holidays.

In spite of (несмотря на) the many advantages which travel agents can offer, there are still quite a few people who "go it alone", choosing their own destination and booking their tickets and accommodation themselves.

Travel agencies started long ago. Thomas Cook was one of the first travel agents. He started to organize excursions by train in the middle of the last century. Later on, he also organized excursions from England to the European continent. In 1890 he began to sell travel tickets to places in England.

Sometimes the agents are right but sometimes they are wrong. All this makes their business rather risky, because if they make mistakes, they can lose a lot of money.

Daniel Defoe (1660—1731) was a famous English writer of the eighteenth century (век). He wrote his world famous novel "The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe when he was nearly 60 years old.

The story of Robinson Crusoe was based (была основана) on the real adventures of a sailor called Alexander Selkirk ['selk3:k], who had lived (прожил) alone for four years on a desert (необитаемый) island. The book, however, also contains a lot of incidents (случаи) from the author's imagination (фантазия).

When the book was published in 1719, it immediately (немедленно) became popular. Defoe made his story so realistic (достоверный) that everyone believed it.

Defoe didn't write his book for children. But every child now knows "Robinson Crusoe", how he learned to catch goats and to make pots (горшки), how he made an umbrella and had hundreds of adventures.

Daniel Defoe wrote many other books, but for "Robinson Crusoe" he is called "the father of English prose" (его называют отцом английской прозы).

Horatio Nelson (1758-1805)

Horatio Nelson is a British naval commander, famous for his victories against the French during the Napoleonic Wars.

Horatio was born on September 29, 1758 in Norfolk, in the family of a clergyman (священник англиканской церкви). At the age of 12 he joined the Royal Navy. He started to serve on a ship commanded by his uncle, Captain Maurice Suckling. At the age of 20 he became a captain of a ship in the West Indies.

When Britain entered the French Revolutionary Wars in 1793, Nelson was recalled to service. During the war he helped to capture (захватывать)Corsica, he lost the sight in his right eye. Later he lost his right arm at the Battle of Santa Cruz .

In 1798 Nelson destroyed Napoleon's fleet at the Battle of the Nile.

As a commander Nelson was known for his bold (дерзкий) actions. For example, in 1801 at the Battle of Copenhagen he ignored orders to stop action. He put the telescope to his blind eye and claimed: "/ really do not see the signal!" An hour later the battle was won, and Nelson was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the British fleet.

Admiral Nelson is best known for the Battle of Trafalgar, which took place on October 21, 1805. But his most famous battle was also his last. He was hit by a bullet and died soon after the battle.

He was buried in St. Paul's Cathedral. A tall column with his statue was erected to his memory in Trafalgar Square.
