Hello. Hello. Are you there? My instruments tell me that you are able to hear my voice, but unable to talk back to me. My
computations tell me it is impossible for your voice to carry forward to my time. But I have been able to make changes in the
wiring and communication systems of my room so that I can
traverse time and talk to you. If my calculations are correct and you are hearing my voice on some type of electrical apparatus, than this is quite a significant day in history – the first transtime electro-wave communication!
Imagine, you are hearing my voice from the year 2431 back to your time, which I have computed to be in the first decade of the 21st century.
However if I am wrong and you are not listening to this transmission, there is no way for me to know it.
I suppose there is nothing for me to do but assume that you are hearing my voice.

|
а) это очень значимый исторический день – первая трансвременная электроволновая связь.
|
-
So that I can traverse time and talk to you.
|
б) если же я ошибаюсь и вы не слушаете, я никак не смогу узнать об этом.

This is quite a significant day in history – the first transtime electro wave communication.

в) вы можете слышать мой голос, но не можете говорить мне в ответ.
|
-
If I am wrong and you are not listening ..., there is no way for me to know it.
|
г) для того, чтобы я смог сместить время и поговорить с вами.

Task 2. Say the following phrases in Russian.
-
My computations tell me it is impossible for your voice to carry forward to my time.
-
Imagine, you are hearing my voice from the year 2431 back to your time, which I have computed to be in the first decade of the 21st century.
-
I suppose there is nothing for me to do, but assume that you are hearing my voice.
Task 3. Answer the questions.
-
What is Trinum's number?
-
Where does he live? )
-
What things has he only read about or seen in pictures?
-
What supplies air with oxygen?
-
What toxic substances polluted the water for centuries to come?
Well, let me introduce myself. My name is Trinum and my number is 600-509-60-215. I live on the planet Earth in the same place that you are now sitting.
My studies of history and geography tell me that you know such primitive things as trees, dirt and running water. These are things, which I have only read about or seen in pictures.
I have also learnt from my history lesson that the air in your world is not poisonous and that you are not afraid to leave your room without your breathing apparatus.
Today very little space on Earth can be given to the green trees and plants that in your times supply the air with oxygen. That you could so easily breathe the Earth's air is one surprise, but even more amazing is the fact that there was so much of the substance called water in your time that you were able to move about it, instead of receiving only enough to maintain your life.
What is more, your generation added mercury and DDT to the soil and ocean. These toxic substances polluted the water for centuries to come.

* generation – поколение
I will describe for you my room – the environment in which I spend almost all of my time. I have heard about times when men and women used to live and pass their time outside their room. It is difficult to believe, because of our population
density. We have a thousand times as many people on Earth now as in your
era, so there is little free space. Every square foot that is not used for living units is needed for the production of food. Factories make food from chemicals, since farms are too wasteful and were abandoned centuries ago. My room is a
marvel of the human ability to build and
supply his or her needs. It's six feet long and approximately two feet wide. My whole room is about the same size as your furniture called a bed.

marvel – чудо, диво
supply – удовлетворять
era ['ıərə] – э'ра
The screen and other communication systems are located in the ceiling directly above my face. Oxygen, water and nutritional elements are supplied through tubes attached to the left wall of my room. Waste materials are carried out through tubes attached to the right wall of my room. The temperature of my room is controlled automatically, as is my schedule of walking and sleeping.

* screen – экран, щит
ceiling – потолок
attach – прикреплять
My room takes care of me. It given all the things I could possibly want. On the screen I can dial any lesson on any topic I choose. I can also dial the rooms of my friends. We can talk together about the interesting things we are learning from our screen. Of course, we don't have much time for such social communication, because we are awake only four hours a day. You see, when awake a person consumes more energy for life support and for screen. Energy must be rationed so that there will be enough for all of us. Ah, yes. It is a good life here in my room. Everything is provided for me. I don't need to move at all. I suppose I should not really tell you so much about my room; 1 know you will start wishing for such a perfect environment for yourself. No need to go from place to place or do things with other people or worry about the details of life.

My favourite kinds of lessons on the screen are about science and history. It was through the study of science that I was able to discover the principle of sending electro-waves through time.
From history lesson I have heard about life in your time. Here, I shall dial that lesson and let you hear parts of it for yourself.
"... Coal and petroleum resources were consumed at a rapid rate. Automobiles, power plants and factories all used ever increasing quantities because of increasing population. Finally the supply of coal and oil ran out in the year 2250, and we have had to rely on nuclear power ever since."
The lack of fuel does not matter much, through. We have no need for gasoline, since we have no automobiles. We certainly can not waste space on roads, as it was done in your day. Besides, our lives are planned so that we seldom need to go anywhere.

Of course, sometimes I dream about how the Earth used to be before it became so crowded. Here let me play the part for you about the rapid growth of people on the Earth – the population explosion as they used to call it. Ah. Here it is. Let's see how you like it.
"...Medical Science discovered the cure for plague and other illnesses and this prolonged the lifespan. As a result, more people were born than died, and the population grew at the rate of 130 thousand each day in the 1970s. Thus, the 3 billion people of 1970s grew to 6 billion by the year 2000 and 12 billion people were alive on the Earth just 30 years later. Finally no more space could be found for the people, power plants, oxygen suppliers, and food factories."
Well, that's what happened. With the population doubling every 30 years the Earth has become a thousand times more crowded than it was in your time. Oh, well, I suppose, I should be glad I have my room to feed me, keep me warm, and clean my air. for me. If it weren't for our rooms, we all would have died years ago.

Task 4. Put the paragraphs in the right order to finish up the text.
|
But as it is, we live a good life ... And when they come and open my room and help me out, I drink in every golden minute of walk.
|
|
Of course, it would be impossible for everyone on Earth to go walking at the same time – there is just not that much space.
|
|
Enough food and water to maintain life, the screen to occupy out minds four hours each day, and on Thursday we Fives go for a walk. That's right. Every Thursday those of us whose numbers end in 5 get to walk for an hour.
|
|
I can hardly wait until tomorrow, because tomorrow is Thursday, and we Fives walk on Thursday.
|
|
Things are organized so that each group is allowed one hour each week in which they may leave their rooms and, with the help of the strong ones, walk about on the footpaths between the rooms.
|
|
As Thursday draws near, I get more and more excited. I eagerly strap on my breathing apparatus and my life support system and wait for the strong ones to come.
|
Task 5. Answer the questions.
-
Would you like to live during Trinum's time? Why?
-
Is such a future possible? Why?
-
How could such a future happen?
-
How could such a future be prevented?
Task 6.
Trinum's world is the result of events that happened and decisions that were made in the 20th century.
Identify the
trends that may have resulted in a world such as his. Consider the following:
-
Population.
-
Usage and distribution of natural resources.
-
Energy usage.
-
Food consumption.
-
Housing.
-
Transportation.
-
Political ideologies.
