1. Green Love Affair

2. Beauty and Entertainment

3. Decoration and Fantasy

4. Place for Pleasure and Retreat

5. Garden Activities

6. Look of a British Garden

7. Gardens and the British Character

8. Friendly Private Property

A. A typical addition to the British garden is the pond. These are small areas of water that are designed to look like authentic rock pools, with running water, fish and vegetation. Ponds make the garden more beautiful and attractive, and turn it into a place for fun and entertainment. They are very popular with cats, which eat all the fish. Children also like ponds. Sometimes, they enjoy throwing cats in the water.

B. Most of the time is devoted to hard gardening work. This may involve mowing the lawns, cutting roses, moving pots from one part of the garden to another, watering things with the garden hose and so on. The garden is also a place for relaxation and entertainment. The British like to organise barbecue parties in their gardens, and have their meals on garden furniture whenever possible. On particularly hot days they may even bring out the paddling pool, which is a plastic pool filled with water where the British can cool off their aching feet.

C. The British love their gardens. British men and women spend hours and hours every week trying to make their gardens look as perfect as possible, competing with one another to produce the fattest, greenest lawns in the neighbourhood. Deep down, they despise anyone who has a better garden; and they look down on anyone who doesn’t bother to look after their gardens at all. Working in the garden provides the British with hours of fun, work and activity.

D. One of the main benefits is that being in the garden means dealing with plants, and not people. After all, plants won’t criticise you, be rude to you or laugh at the way you dance. Gardening is also a way of exercising power and control. It’s all about being the master and watching as your creations begin to grow. It’s also connected with the cycle of life, and about being in touch with nature. Having a garden is also a territorial thing. It’s a British person’s own private property and they are proud of this.

E. One particularly popular item of decoration for the garden is the garden gnome. Gnomes are strange creatures made of plastic or porcelain and with pointed hats on their heads. For many people, the gnome is the perfect adornment for a garden. But most probably it is much more than just decoration, as the British like to think of their garden as a fantasy world, peopled by funny-looking men in pointed hats where they are the gentle, loving giants.

F. Gardening is an essential part of being British. As ex-prime minister Mrs Thatcher once said, “Whether it is our character which makes us gardeners, or gardening that shapes our characters, I’m unsure.” And as the French commentator once said, “You may know a Frenchman by his baguette; the German by his Frankfurter; the Belgian by his chocolates; and the Englishman by his garden.”

G. One of the most unusual objects to be found in a garden is the shed. This is a sacred place, particularly for British men. Sheds are little wooden or plastic constructions filled with gardening tools and many other useful things. It is a place where British men are truly at home. It’s a refuge from reality of the outside world, and a place where hobbies can be pursued in peace. Psychologists have been studying men and their sheds for centuries, but they still remain a mystery to modern science. If you look inside a British man’s shed, it can tell you all about his personality, his passions and his obsessions.

Why I Like England
I like living in England because everywhere else is foreign and strange. The only language I speak is English. But I wouldn’t like anyone to think that I don’t like Abroad. I do. Abroad means adventure and the possibility of danger and delicious food, but Abroad is also tiring and confusing and full of foreigners who tell you that the bank is open when it’s not.

Being a town dweller I passionately love the English countryside. Though I must admit it looks better on the telly than it does in real life. I only fully appreciated the varied nature of the English countryside after driving for two days through a Swedish pine forest.

I like English weather; like the countryside, it’s constantly drawing attention to itself. I started this article in a room filled with piercing sunlight, but now a strong wind has materialized and the room is full of gloom.

I like the reserve of English people, because I don’t particularly want to talk to strangers in trains either, unless of course there is a crisis such as a “cow on the line” causing an hour’s delay. In which case my fellow passengers and I will happily spill our life stories to anybody we can get to listen.

I like the way in which the English cope with disasters: cut our water off and we will cheerfully queue at a stand pipe in the snow. Throw us into rat infested foreign jails and we will get out saying that our brutal-looking jailers were “decent chaps who treated us well.” I bet somewhere, pinned on a dirty prison wall, is a Christmas card: “To my friend and captor, Pedro, from Jim Wilkinson of cell 14.”

The England I love best is, of course, the England of childhood, when children could play in the street without the neighbours getting a petition. I’m happy to live in a country that produces important things: wonderful plays, books, literature, heart surgeons, gardeners and Private Eye. I was asked to write about why I like England in 700 words. Now if I’d been asked to write about why I don’t like England I’d have needed 1000, and I suspect, it would have been easier to write. It’s our birthright and privilege to criticize our own country and shout for revolution. I asked a friend of mine where, given the choice and enough money, he would choose to live. He replied gloomily, “There isn’t anywhere else.”

Stamps

The idea for the adhesive postage stamp was first suggested by the English schoolmaster and civil servant Rowland Hill as one of the many postal reforms in Britain in 1837. Hill’s conception, for which he was later knighted, was derived from A22_______________ labels that had been issued almost a century earlier in many parts of Europe to collect a tax on newspaper.

Through Hill’s efforts, on May 1, 1840, Britain released the world’s first officially issued adhesive postage stamp, a one-penny denomination universally referred to as the Penny Black. The stamp A23_______________ a portrait of Queen Victoria, which established a postal precedent in Britain. Since that time, all regular-issue stamps have portrayed the A24_______________ monarch.

A companion two-pence blue Victoria portrait stamp was placed on sale on May 8th, 1840, and both denominations became so popular that many people bought them not only for postal use, but for their design and value A25_______________ souvenirs. The hobby of stamp collecting was born, therefore, within days after the Victoria stamps were issued. The Penny Black is not a rare stamp – many millions were issued – but, as the world’s first adhesive issue, it A26_______________ highly regarded.

Because these stamps proved to be so successful, by 1860 most nations had adopted the use of postage stamp. Designs A27_______________ imitated those of Britain, with portraits usually depicting heads of state, and symbols or artistic designs generally being national in character. Pictorial design was more and more used toward the end of the 19th century, and stamps created to commemorate important events began to appear. The trend has continued and today almost all countries A28_______________ large, colourful pictorials. Often they are intended for the revenue to be obtained from sale to collectors.

Now we are ready to start.
Speaker 1

It was summer and I was going to spend some days with my friends in their country house. When my parents said they were going to Europe together with my sister, I didn’t say anything. But soon my sister lost her passport and it was clear that she couldn’t go. My parents asked me to join them, otherwise they would have lost a lot of money. I didn’t want to go. But finally I agreed. And I didn’t regret. I saw so many interesting places and I enjoyed being with my parents. So my sister did me a favour.

Speaker 2

My brother immigrated to Australia twenty years ago. We’d always kept in touch and I’d seen his wife and kids sitting in the garden on video. I promised to visit them, and so I did after long hesitations. I went there for Christmas. Before that I’d always refused to fly but there’s no point in worrying too much when you are so young. And it was the best Christmas I’ve ever had! It was full of unforgettable impressions and breathtaking events.

Speaker 3

I went to the States last year with a friend of mine. We’re used to travelling around on our own without spending too much money. So we didn’t mind taking buses everywhere. But we avoided hitchhiking because we didn’t want to risk to be mugged. We saw someone being mugged outside a bus station! Apart from that, it was a great holiday. The Grand Canyon was the most marvellous sight I’ve ever seen in my life.

Speaker 4

Every Muslim who is healthy and has enough money is expected to visit Mecca once in his or her lifetime. I’d put off going for years – I just couldn’t afford to go. But then, last year, I decided to make a real effort and go. It was amazing. I had seen the crowds walking round on TV before but the place was really bustling. I really enjoyed meeting people from so many different countries.

Speaker 5

We’d been waiting for this holiday on the Caribbeans for a long time saving money and buying all necessary clothes. When the day came, we went to the airport where we learnt that our flight was delayed because of the hurricane on the Caribbeans. So we spent a terrible night in the airport. Then we came to the capital city and were told that we had to spend two nights in a hotel because the plane couldn’t take off because of bad weather. It was really awful. Finally, when we got to the island, it appeared that there was no hurricane at all. So I’ll never use that agency where I’d bought that tour again.

Speaker 6

I’d always wanted to go to Italy and visit Rome, the Vatican, and Florence to see all the magnificent art there – and I wasn’t disappointed! It’s worth learning to speak a bit of Italian before you go. I intended to see quite a lot but there were so many tourists willing to get everywhere! I hate standing in long queues. You must have seen the crowds being pushed through places like cattle. But, all the same, it was my dream destination and it was marvellous. I’d planned to go to Venice, too, but, unfortunately, didn’t have time for that.

Now we are ready to start.
Anne: Well, Chris, the Oscars are coming up. So are you going to watch the ceremony? I’m really looking forward to it.

Chris: You know, Anne, I’m rather skeptical about the Oscars. I don’t really think it reflects the public opinion of these films.

Anne: But it’s a chance for real critics to actually give their opinion of these films and to set out a standard for all the other filmmakers and directors to follow. I mean, we’ve got some fantastic films there with great actors and actresses. They’re really setting a standard.

Chris: I’m not sure. Still, I think there are too many personal interests in the film industry. I don’t think that awarding prizes is a fair thing. They simply vote for people who have worked for them in the past, or… They all depend on each other in Hollywood and give prizes to each other.

Anne: No, Chris. As far as I know, they all vote independently. I mean there’s no getting together…

Chris: Well, can be, Anne, can be…

Anne: If you just look back into the past, some truly great films have been recognised and won the Oscars. And they were considered to be great in the whole world.

Chris: Yeah, Anne, but don’t you think they’ve become great because they’ve won several Oscars? What I mean is that a lot of these awards really give films a better reputation or status than they deserve. On the other hand, there are so many films that have been ignored.

Anne: Yes, but I can’t really think of any film that hasn’t had an Oscar and deserved one.

Chris: But that’s probably because you haven’t heard of it. I mean, the whole film industry of Hollywood is interested in high-budget English-speaking films. People just don’t know anything about good foreign films. You know, there are some great French films, for example, that have never been nominated although they deserve it.

Anne: And what’s the point in watching them? You don’t understand them, do you?

Chris: Well, I like them. And I especially like films without big stars, because you never know what happens at the end of such a film. I mean, if you get Tom Cruise in a movie, you know he’s going to be there till the very end of the film. He can’t be shot or die at the beginning of the film. And I, for one, prefer to be surprised by films, rather than to be a passive viewer.

Anne: Probably, you are right here. Well, would you like to come and see a good film. They’re showing the Scorsese film, “The Departed”. I think it’s really worth seeing.

Chris: Oh, yes, that sounds great.

Now we are ready to start.
Interviewer: Mary Stevenson is only 25. She runs her own small business. She designs and makes clothes for women. So, Mary, can you tell me what you used to do before you became a fashion designer?

Mary Stevenson: I used to be a University student, studying for a degree in Business and Italian to help me when I set up a business of my own.

Interviewer: Was there anything in your University experience you can remember that influenced you greatly or inspired you to become a fashion designer and specialize in this very area?

Mary Stevenson: I’ll start with my earlier experience, if you don’t mind. I remember watching my father at work when I was younger. It was a great pleasure for me. My father is a very talented man, an artist and craftsman. He influenced me greatly and showed me an awful lot of things. With his help I managed to acquire a number of specific techniques, which I apply even now. And, I also remember visiting numerous exhibitions in museums of tribal and ethnic art which inspired me greatly.

Interviewer: What sort of things did you have to do in order to get started?

Mary Stevenson: Well, the first thing was to present a business plan, in which I had to project the year’s objectives, sales, demands, that sort of things in order to get the necessary funding. I had to plan where the business was going to head and how to keep it under control.

Interviewer: Did you need to raise a lot of money in order to get started?

Mary Stevenson: No, I didn’t need to do that because I applied to the Youth Business Trust for funding. It took them rather long to analyse and assess my business plan, and, as a result, they gave me a loan and awarded me with a grant in order to start up the business.

Interviewer: What can you say about your first steps in business? Did you do anything that you needn’t have done?

Mary Stevenson: Well, actually, I needn’t have spent so much money and effort on advertising. That was one of my principal mistakes.

Interviewer: If you’d known what it was like, would you have started your own business?

Mary Stevenson: Yes, of course, I would. I’ve been in business for a year now. So, I can’t see all the benefits yet. But what I know for sure is that I would definitely have done the same thing.
