   Nigel Mansell was, leading the 1986 Formula One drivers' championship by six points from Alain Prost. Only nineteen laps before the end of the final race of the season, Mansell was in third position. If he stayed in third, he would win the title for the first time. Just then, one of the tyres of his Williams car exploded. Prost won the race and the title by one point.

Then, in the final minute of the match, the referee gave Nantes a soft penalty. The ball hit the goalkeeper's knee and bounced into the net. Calais had lost.

   1992. The Olympic 400m semi-final in Barcelona. Derek Redmond felt good. He had helped the British 4x400m relay team to victory at the world championships. Desperately, he tried to continue running. 'I told myself I had to finish. Then, I felt a hand on my shoulder.' It was his father, Jim. 70,000 people stood and cheered and Derek cried as his father helped him finish the race.

Late in the second half, with the score 6-6, Scotland had a penalty in front of the posts. Hastings had already scored two more difficult penalties. If he succeeded, Scotland would go three points ahead. Surprisingly he missed it. Nobody in the ground could believe it. A few minutes later England scored and won the game.

   At the 1954 Vancouver marathon Englishman Jim Peters ran into the stadium an amazing seventeen minutes ahead of his nearest rival. After twenty-six miles in the heat, he was certain to win. But the crowd's cheers died as the exhausted athlete fell onto the track. For eleven dramatic minutes, Peters tried to finish the race, but 200 metres from the end he fell for the last time. When he woke up in hospital, he thought he'd won.

   June 1986, Argentine midfielder Diego Maradona scored two goals and led Argentina past England and into the semifinals of the World Cup. The first goal Maradona scored became one of the most famous in the world. Challenging the England goalkeeper for the ball, Maradona raised his left arm into the air to fist the ball into the net. Television pictures and photographs released later, showed the goal to be illegal. When asked about the goal after the game, Maradona said the goal was scored "a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God." Argentina went on to win 2-1 and eventually lift the World Cup.

The world's most famous smile - and the world's most famous painting - is Leonardo's Mona Lisa (La Gioconda). But how much do you know about her? Who is the mysterious woman and why is her smile so special?

Leonardo began work on this portrait around 1500 and spent many years working on it. According to the art historian Vasari, it is the portrait of the young wife of a merchant from Florence, but Leonardo never gave him the picture. He kept it for himself.

Later the French king bought it and put it in the royal palace at Fontainebleau. Centuries later, the French king Louis XIV moved the palace to Versailles and the painting moved too. For a while, Napoleon had it in his bedroom, but the Mona Lisa moved to the Louvre when it became a museum. It has not moved since then, apart from a few years at the beginning of the twentieth century.

In 1911, the painting was stolen. It could not be found anywhere, but in 1913 the thief sent a letter to a gallery in Italy. He wanted to sell it. But why did the thief wait two years before returning it? During this time, many copies of the painting were made and sold to American collectors. Is the painting now in the Louvre also a fake? Many people think that this is a real possibility.

Leonardo's painting is extremely life-like, but many experts are not sure that it is a portrait of the woman from Florence. There are many theories, but perhaps the most interesting is that it is a portrait of Leonardo himself. An American expert has compared Leonardo's self-portrait and the Mona Lisa and she has found that many of the features are exactly the same.

The two most important features of a face are the corners of the eyes and the mouth. If you look at the painting, you will see that these features are blurred - they are much less clear than the rest of the face. As a result, the viewer has to imagine what the Mona Lisa is thinking. The mystery of her smile is just a bit of clever artistic technique.
