Foreword
The handbook is a collection of tasks to the story “Hampton House” written by Jenny Dooley. The story is recorded on the audiocassette. The story includes ten chapters, each of which is entitled.
The handbook is intended for the first-year students for both class work and homework. This handbook has been designed to provide students with English language and communicative skills that will allow them to enlarge their vocabulary both passive and active and, besides, improve their grammatical skills and listening skills.
The handbook is divided into ten chapters in concordance with the names of the chapters on the tape. It is recommended to devote one class to one chapter.
The teacher should feel free to select the tasks for the students’ homework. During the lessons students learn to transcribe the words, explain the meaning of the target phrases and give the context the phrase was used in, find the synonyms to the words, give the words corresponding to the definitions, fill in the blanks with the proper prepositions. In addition, the following tasks are recommended: to speak and translate together with the tape.
After the exercises to the chapter had been done the students are offered to have an open discussion basing on the questions given at the end of each chapter, they finish up retelling the story in class.
