As for me, I would like to visit Madame Tussaud’s Museum. I want to take a lot of pictures with figures of famous people. Have you heard about this museum before? We are going to read about it. Your task is to read the text and say what it is about.
Madame Tussaud inherited the business from her uncle, a man called Philip Curtis who made wax anatomical models and then turned to making entire human figures. The oldest figure in the museum is a mechanical model of a princess which breathes in and out. Philip Curtis made it in 1765. Madame Tussaud has 180 wax models representing celebrities from the past and present, historical and political figures and characters from horror. Each figure is disconcertingly realistic. When a new one is made, experts research the real person as thoroughly as they can, where possible measuring, weighing, photographing and taking plaster casts to ensure that the wax figure matches in every detail - from height to skin texture to ear shape. You can get as close to the wax figures as you like - touch them, hug them and look up their skirts. But there's more to do than look at the figures. Madame Tussaud’s staff will take professional photos of you with your favourite celebrity. There's also a ride called 'The Spirit of London' which takes you on a journey through London's history. Madame Tussaud hasn't lost its appeal since those days - over 2 and a half million people visit each year. It's on Marylebone Road in central London. It is a 2 minute walk from Baker Street tube station and is signposted from there. To find out more on opening times and ticket prices, and to book a ticket go to www.madame-tussauds.co.uk or phone 0870 999 0046. Although it's possible to buy a ticket on the day of your visit, queues can be long, so it's a good idea to book ahead. There are substantial discounts for booking online.
2. What can you see there?
3. How do specialists work?
4. How can you get to the museum?
Charles went to school and his teachers thought he was very clever. But suddenly, when he was eleven, his father went to prison for his debts and the family went too.Only Charles didn’t go to prison. He went to work in a factory, where he washed bottles. He worked ten hours a day and earned six shillings (30 pence) a week. Every night, after work, he worked four miles back to his room. Charles hated it and never forgot the experience . He used it in many novels, especially David Copperfield and Oliver Twist.
T.: Do you like to go to the Zoo?
P. Yes, I like to go to the Zoo.
T.: How often do you go to the Zoo?
P.: I go to the Zoo once a year.
T.: With whom do you usually go to the Zoo?
P.: I go to the Zoo with my parents.
T.: Today we're going to read a text about the London Zoo. Your task is to read the text and make the title to this text.
Many years ago the London Zoo had a young elephant from Africa. The elephant was very small. His name was Jumbo. A man looked after him. His name was Scott. The elephant grew very quickly. Soon he learned to carry people on his back. Children liked to sit on the little benches which he carried on his back. The people of London knew Jumbo and liked him. One day a rich American saw Jumbo. He wanted to buy him and take him to America to show Jumbo in the circus there and to make a lot of money. He paid the London Zoo two thousand dollars for Jumbo. When the people of London heard about it, they wrote letters and articles to newspapers and organized meetings of protest. They didn’t want Jumbo to go to America. But nothing helped. Scott began to prepare to go to America with Jumbo to look after him there. When the elephant came out the Zoo, he lay down in the street and didn’t want to get up. When at last he got up, they began to walk to the port of London. Many people stood in the streets and watched. The people wanted Jumbo to stay in the London Zoo.
But Jumbo and Scott went to America on a ship. In America Jumbo was a circus elephant. He learned to carry things from one place to another and to dance. The Americans also liked Jumbo.
Now let's do some exercises:

Do you have any pets? What is it? Who takes care of your pet? What do you think why people keep animals at home? (учащиеся работают в парах, отвечая на вопросы друг друга)
T.: Tell us about your partners, please. (учащиеся рассказывают о своих собеседниках)

This is a story about a small dog. People in Britain love dogs and like to read dog stories, but this is a true story.
Bobby was a terrier with long hair. Bobby was a brave dog and there is a statue to him in Edinburgh – the capital of Scotland.
Bobby and his master lived in the country near Edinburgh about a hundred years ago. Bobby’s master was a farmer. Bobby helped him to look after the sheep.
When Bobby’s master was very old, he went to live in Edinburgh. But he left the dog on the farm with a new master. Bobby loved his old master very much and soon he ran away and went to the city to find his old friend. He looked here and there and ran along the streets of the city and at last he found his master. The man was poor and ill.
Soon Bobby’s master died and people did not see the dog for some time. Then one day Mr. Trail, the owner of a café, saw Bobby near the café and gave him some food. Bobby took the food and ran away. The dog came to the café five or six times. He took the food that Mr. Trail gave him, but didn’t eat it. He ran away with it in his mouth.
One day Mr. Trail went after Bobby and came to the cemetery. There he found the dog on the grave of his master. Bobby stayed there every day in good and bad weather. He sat under a big stone when it rained and Mr. Trail came and gave him food there.
People came to see the dog in the cemetery and children played with him. All the people in Edinburgh knew the dog and loved him.
When Bobby died, they put a statue on his grave with his name and dates.
I. Answer the questions:
1. What was Bobby’s master?
2. When did Bobby’s master go to Edinburgh?
3. Why did Bobby run away from the farm?
4. How did Bobby find his master in Edinburgh?
5. Why did people not see Bobby for some days?
