My city
We are in the centre of a big city. There are high buildings (sky-scrapers) on each side of the street. The traffic is heavy: buses and trolley-buses carrying passengers; trucks and vans carrying mail and loads. There are different kinds of cars running along the streets. Be careful crossing the street, look at the traffic-light:

The green light says — go,

The yellow says — attention,

The red light says — no, no any action.

When the green light flashes first look on the left, in the middle of the street look on the right and after that you may go on crossing the road if everything is all right.

All the people walk on the pavement (sidewalk). Some of them are in a hurry and others might stop at the large display window, they are interested in some things to buy or they simply look at their own reflection.

Shopping
On a large open corner stands a store, the windows of which run 50 yards down one street and 50 yards down the other. The windows are most attractively dressed. We enter the department store.

The first thing that strikes us is its comparative emptiness. There are, indeed two or three people at each counter, but no queues, no people in the centre of the shop.

It is true that this store has all that can be found in every grocery.

Tea, oatmeal, spices, caviar, bacon, ham, butter, cheese and the rest. Then we pass on into another department. Expensive furs, beautiful evening frocks, gloves, shoes of every pattern and hats.

Then we called in the jewellery to buy a birthday present for my sister. The assistant showed us some lovely ear-rings, necklaces, bracelets, but we finally decided on a very pretty brooch with pearls. Then we called at a dairy to buy milk, cream and a dozen of eggs. At the baker's we bought a brown loaf and two rolls.

As I am a great lover of fish we also visited the fish monger's. We saw a good displays of cod, salmon and herrings. We choose some herrings for our supper. That completed our shopping and we went home feeling rather tired.

Books in our life
Every day we read something and can't imagine our life without reading. It may be a textbook or an article in a magazine or a newspaper, an advertisement or a chapter from a famous novel. There are different kinds of books: historical novels and poems, science fiction and adventure stories, detective stories and biographies, fairy tales and fables. Besides there are a lot of dictionaries and reference books and hundreds of newspapers and magazines.

Why do we read books? Sometimes we want to get some information or to find answers to the thrilling questions of our life. Then we take a book with a serious content. Sometimes we want to entertain ourselves, to relax, to spend free time. Besides we use different dictionaries and reference books when we prepare reports or our homework.

Books can tell us a lot about lives of famous people, ancient times, historical events, politics and teenager's problems. Books help to discover new things, educate, solve problems, expand your outlook. Many people have books at home. These are books of their favourite authors. Besides one can get a book in the library.

Nevertheless there are people who like reading and those who think that it is a boring thing which takes much time, hurts eyes and causes a headache.

As for me, I like books of Russian and foreign writers. My favourite writer is Jack London (1876-1916). He was born in San-Francisco in a family of a poor farmer. From his early childhood he had to earn his living by selling newspapers and doing odd jobs. At the age of 17 he became a sailor. The impressions he gathered during his voyages formed basis of his future sea stories. In 1900 (1876-1916) J.London entered the university but he couldn't graduate from it because of the financial difficulties. Then he worked in a laundry.

When gold was discovered in Alaska thousands of adventurers rushed there. Jack London was among them. He wrote wonderful stories about strong and brave people. His stories and novels were true to life. The author created unforgetable characters.

Meals
The usual meals in England are: breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner. Breakfast is generally a bigger meal than they have on a Continent. In the morning an Englishman has his favourite breakfast which consists of porridge followed by fried bacon and eggs. Then he has toast with butter and marmalade. Perhaps some fruit will also be eaten. For a change, you may have cold ham or fish, some coffee and a roll. Breakfast is often a quick meal, because the father has to get away for his work, the children have to go to school and the mother has her housework to do.

At midday people have their lunch. It consists of 2 courses. The businessman finds it impossible to get home for this, and so takes his lunch in a cafe or a restaurant. For the lunch one can take cold meat, beef, mutton, and veal with boiled or fried potatoes, vegetables followed by biscuits and cheese and a cup of coffee.

Afternoon tea follows between 4 and 5 o'clock. This is not generally a formal meal. You may sit anywhere you like and have a cup on your knee and eat thin buttered bread, pastries and a cake.

The evening meal is called dinner. Usually a savoury meat course is followed by stewed fruit, pudding and tea, or whatever they can afford.
