Цели и задачи
Учебный аспект: повторение и закрепление активной лексики, развитие навыков чтения, формирование коммуникативной компетенции, формирование умения выделить главную информацию в тексте, учить просмотровому и сканированному чтению, закрепление оборота there was/ there were.
Развивающий аспект: развитие умения связного высказывания по теме, совершенствование навыков чтения и грамматических навыков.
Воспитательный аспект: воспитание уважения к культуре и традициям страны изучаемого языка.
Форма урока: закрепление лексических, грамматических и коммуникативных навыков.
Оборудование: мультимедийная доска ( компьютерные презентации по темам "Edinburgh”, there was/there were, аутентичный видео фильм "Edinburgh”), магнитофон.
Тема урока: "Edinburgh: а colourful city ".

I. Организационный момент.

Boys and girls! Today we shall speak about the capital of Scotland Edinburgh, its cultural traditions and history and we shall remember the past form of the verb –to be. But at first, look at the screen and repeat after me:

Good for you! Last year we learned the theme "Great Britain”. I wonder, do you remember any facts about Scotland? So,
1). What is the capital of Scotland?
2). Where is Scotland situated?
3). What is the symbol of Scotland?
4). What is the national Scottish instrument?
5). What is the national male dress?

Your memory is good! Now look at the screen again, I want to add some information about Scotland. So, Scotland in brief.
1). The flag of Scotland has two colours: white and blue: the white cross and the blue background.
2). You have remembered that Scotland is the part of Great Britain. Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland.
3). Scotland is rich in lakes. Lake Loch Ness is the most legendary among them.
4). I think you have heard about the mysterious monster Nessie, who lives in the lake.
5). Scotland is associated with the names of Walter Scott – Scottish writer
Robert Louis Stevenson – Scottish writer. Robert Burns – Scottish poet

All right! Now, let’s divide our class into 5 groups (3 pupils in each group). Are you ready? Open your books on page 24 and find exercise 1. Masha, read the task , please. Did you understand the task? So, let`s read the headings. Well, the first paragraph is for you, the second …………… . Do it in groups, please. I give you 2 minutes.
Let`s check the answers. The heading of the 1paragraph is………………………………………… .
The question for the first group. Find in the paragraph the facts that :
1). Edinburgh is the new and old city
2). Edinburgh is the city of castles.
3). George Mackenzie wasn`t a good man.
4) Edinburgh is a great place for a party.

Well done! Now exercise number 2. Read the text and answer the questions. Now, I give you 5 minutes to read the text and try to find the answer. So, it’s enough. Nastya read the first questions and ask it somebody you want (in chain).

Thank you very much. You were great! Edinburgh is famous for its castles and palaces. And what about our country? Below the picture you can find the questions.
The 1 question: Which castles are famous in your country? Where are they? These questions are for your groups.
The 2 question: What festivals are there in your country? Where are they? What do people do there? These questions are for your groups. I give you 2 minutes. So, what can you tell us?... Good for you!

Now let`s refresh your memory. Tell me 3 forms of the verb –to be. Yes, you are right. Look at the screen:
The verb –to be has 2 forms in the Past Tense:
Was - for singular nouns or pronouns
Were - for plural nouns and pronouns
Eg: I was in Edinburgh last year.
We were in Edinburgh last year.

Now in your books find exercise 1 and complete the table below. I give you 1 minute. Let`s check it. Do you agree? Now, let`s do exercise 2 in groups.

Exercise 3 on page 25. Look at examples «a»and «b» below. Then choose the correct alternative in sentences 1-5. Do it in groups, please. Listen to the disk and check. Repeat the sentences.

Exercise 4. Look at the picture. This is the picture of Edinburgh in 1910. Tell us what you can see there. Now complete the text with there was/ there were.
